A substantial percentage of drinking water in the Netherlands is obtained as bank groundwater by pumping stations alongside rivers. Rising sea levels and lower river discharges caused by longer droughts and upstream water and groundwater use causes the salt water wedge to penetrate further upstream salinizing the river from time to time, especially near its bottom, thus causing intrusion of salt into the groundwater and affecting nearby drinking water wells. This situation was simulated in a cross section for a pumping station near Ridderker in the Netherlands to show what may happen. The exercise was carried out by Remko Nijzink, in preparation for his Geo2 exam at TUDelft, June 2011.
