Watercolor Demo | Chattanooga Dome Building | Iain Stewart
A demo for Stillman & Birn working on their Alpha Series Paper. The Dome Building in Chattanooga and yes- that is the name. This is looking up Georgia Avenue and the painting is done from a quick reference shot I took with my phone.
Thanks for watching

I think it is brilliant that you are using a tablet to paint from!

Love to watch you paint and the finished art is exquisite. I am sorry to
say that the way this was filmed was a distraction that I finally overcame
by tilting my screen. Please don’t take this as a negative comment about
your work, I truly enjoyed it.

Personally I liked it best around 2:25 when the washes were still very
translucent and you could see the pencil drawing underneath. By the end it
feels a bit too ‘filled in’ imo and he’s having to go in with body colour
to lighten up areas. But amazing technique and I’ve learned lots about
being bold and loose with washes.

Ian, this is great. Do you have a version of this where you explain what
you are doing, e.g. “here I am using raw sienna” etc.?

There is no sound at all?
April 17, 2015 @ 4:38 am
Iain, it appears that you stapled and taped the paper to the board when it
was dry…is that right?? If so the paper should have buckled when you put
your washes on.
Sound would be nice to hear why you are doing what you are doing; even a
bit of back ground music, which is you are using iMovie is quite easy to
add to your videos.
Thanks for posting this.

Yes, sorry guys there is no sound on this one. One of my first attempts at
filming so it’s a bit rough around the edges. Mike- it depends on how much
you saturate the paper for the buckling. For any of you who are interested
I now have a 3 dvd set available through Northlightshop.com Here’s the link
and thanks for the comments.

About the addition of the white. It was totally frowned upon and avoided
sone years ago by the watercolor ” purists” but today a lot of the big
names use lots of body color . They make a dark airea and then wash it down
with Chinese white. It lends a nice misty effect that tempers the dry crisp
look watercolor.
Not to taste of some traditionalists but handled by an accomplished artist
it can look stunning.
